Lighting a cricket field to the correct levels is very important due to the speed and size of the ball used, to ensure all players remain safe and can easily maintain clear vision of the ball. There are no Australian Standards written for cricket field lighting, but a Community Cricket Facilities Guideline has been developed by Cricket Australia, which clearly outlines recommended lux levels and uniformities to be achieved to ensure a game of cricket can be played safely and comfortably. High quality LED lighting can make a significance difference to the overall playing experience and visual comfort.
The Cricket Australia guidelines is based on International standards EN12193 which identifies three main levels of lighting for non-televised cricket matches, and two levels for training/match practice. If you expect to progress from one level to the next in the foreseeable future, ensure that the poles and lighting set-up is designed to accommodate extra lighting, so a complete overhaul is not necessary when you decide to upgrade.
